The action-packed episode saw Euron striking up a relationship with Cersei, Jon Snow finally learning his true parentage, and characters across the Game of Thrones universe converging on Winterfell for what promises to be an epic battle.

Sky Atlantic’s decision to simulcast the HBO premiere meant that hardcore UK fans willing to stay up until 2am were able to watch the first episode of season eight as it aired in the US.

For some British Game of Thrones fans, the sleepless night was a price worth paying to be able to follow fellow viewers’ reactions on social media in real time - and share their own thoughts, to boot.  Here are some of the best fan reactions to Winterfell:

Sansa Stark’s less-than-warm welcome to Daenarys provided much mirth, as fans enjoyed a frosty face-off between two of the show’s most formidable female characters:

For many fans, Jon and Daenarys’ dramatic arrival on dragon-back was eerily reminiscent of a much more family-friendly adventure:

Elsewhere, at Kings Landing, Cersei was joined by 20,000 soldiers of the Golden Company - but she couldn’t help but notice that one thing was missing:

And that wasn’t the only awkward moment for Cersei in Winterfell:

But, of course, the moment most fans had been waiting for came in the closing moments of the episode, when Samwell finally reveals that Jon Snow is the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna - and thus the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.

Although the reveal had other… implications.

Game of Thrones series eight airs on Sky Atlantic on Mondays at 2am (US simulcast) and 9pm.
