What's the latest weather forecast?

The big freeze is set to worsen today as forecasters warned Brits to prepare for the coldest night of the winter amid a brutal snow bomb.

Scotland could experience lows of -16C tonight and into Sunday as the cold snap continues, the Met Office said.

This means it is set to be colder than Thursday which saw -15.4C recorded just before midnight at Braemar in the Scottish Highlands.

Meteorologist Alex Burkill said parts of England could also see sub-zero temperatures reach double digits today.

He told the Press Association: "Over Saturday we'll see some snow showers around the far north, the far west and the far east of the UK.

"Elsewhere it's a cold day again and feeling especially cold in the south where it will be breezy, but for most it will be dry and sunny."

He continued: "Saturday it's likely to be very similar to Thursday night - we could get down to minus 16C (3.2F) in Scotland, but it's worth bearing in mind that even across the south we could get into negative double figures."

Where is it snowing now?

Snow is accumulating in the north of Scotland, the east coast of England, the south of England, and the western reaches of Wales.

The western area of Northern Ireland is also getting its fair share.

There's lying snow across the Moores of South-West England, Dartmoor, Exmoor, and the like.

There's also a large area of snow covering from Bristol across to Oxfordshire, and down towards Hampshire.

Hampshire and other southern areas seem to be suffering the most from the snow, with traffic issues and up to 15cm of snow.

The hills of Wales are also receiving a fair blanketing.

Kent, Sussex, and other areas in the south-west of England are also pretty white this morning.

East Anglia has also received a fair amount of snow, which is being reinforced with fresh showers currently.02

What are the coldest UK winters on record?

Modern winters are nothing in comparison to those of the so-called “little ice-age” which lasted from 1350 until 1850.

These arctic winters resulted in the River Thames becoming frozen solid for months on end.

The worst UK winter on record was dubbed the "Great Frost", way back in 1683-84.

The Thames was covered in 11 inches of thick ice resulting in the famous Frost Fair — a festival held on the frozen river involving ice-skating, gambling and bear-baiting.

The winter of 1739-40 is one of the worst on record with a severe frost, which saw temperatures plummet to -9C, starting on Christmas Day and lasting until February 17.

The only time the River Thames has frozen in modern times was in the so-called “Big Freeze” of 1963 which saw the country covered in a thick blanket of snow.

Sheffield was one of the worst hit with four feet of the white stuff.

Another modern "snowmaggeddon" occurred during December 1978 and the early months of 1979.

Against a backdrop of political instability in the UK, the winter was the worst since 1963.

A bitterly cold wind smashed the country at the end of November 1978 bringing blizzards and snow showers.

The worst winter of the new century was in December 2010 which broke national records and covered Britain in ice and snow.

Once again dubbed the “Big Freeze”, the average temperature for the month, which was -1C, was the coldest for 100 years, the Met Office confirmed.
