Man charged after death of teenage girl Chloe Cockton in Rochdale horror crash

A young man has been charged after a teenage girl died in a Rochdale crash last month.

Chloe Cockton, 16, was a passenger in a Renault Clio which hit a pedestrian barrier on Bury Road at about 2.20am on Sunday, July 24.

Michael Bowker, 18, of Croft Street, Rochdale, has been charged with causing her death by dangerous driving and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has been bailed to appear at Bury and Rochdale Magistrates’ Court on Friday, September 23.

It was revealed last week how Chloe achieved a string of top GCSE grades. The former St Cuthbert’s RC High School student was tragically unable to pick up her results with friends, but did her grieving loved ones proud.

Chloe, of Kirkholt, Rochdale, achieved nine GCSEs at grade A* to C, including an A* in religious education and As in maths and social care. The grades would have left her well place for her dream career in law. Her school posted a poignant message on its Facebook page after her results were received.

After her death, hundreds of people paid tribute to the ‘beautiful’ teenager, with one pal describing her as ‘the brightest star in the sky’.
